THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW: THE COMPLETE SERIES
This 1961-66 CBS sitcomwas so far ahead of its time, it seems smartly sophisticated even today. Carl Reiner envisioned a dual-setting sitcom about his own life, with days as a writer on a comedy variety TV show and evenings and weekends as a loving family man in suburban New York. The network accepted the premise, but not until Reiner removed himself from the central role. So he handed it over to Dick Van Dyke, recast the unknown Mary Tyler Moore as the wife of TV writer “Rob Petrie,” and the rest is brilliant, still-hilarious TV history. The terrific extras on this Image Entertainment set include the original pilot with Reiner as the star, and audio commentary from Reiner, Van Dyke and others. - DB
