Six seasons, 30 DVDs, and one of the most formative TV series of modern times.
David Chase’s brilliant drama series, in its production schedule, spanned two centuries, premiering in 1999 and concluding, both famously and infamously, in 2007. In style and content, it seems to serve as the perfect bridge, or dividing line, between “old” and “new” television dramas, with the antihero coming to full flower in the persona of James Gandolfini’s Tony Soprano. Bursting with energetic performances, brilliantly chosen music, vivacious direction and bold storylines, this series is a true original from beginning to end. Especially the end. Don’t return that final disc – the problem is not with your DVD. – DB
