THE THIN RED LINE
May 26, 2012  | By David Bianculli

IFC, 4:30 p.m. ET

During a weekend when war movies are plentiful, this offering's a sure standout: After filming the brilliant Days of Heaven in 1978, director Terrence Malick took a break from moviemaking — for 20 years. He returned, in 1998, with this war film, directing the movie and writing his own adaptation of the novel by James Jones, who also was the author of From Here to Eternity. Film buffs know Malick left an entire other movie-length narrative on the cutting-room floor, but what he retained is full of amazing imagery. The cast includes Nick Nolte, Sean Penn, John Cusack, George Clooney, John Travolta, Woody Harrelson, John C. Reilly, Adrien Brody and Jim Caviezel. If you happen to be up early on Saturday, IFC's also showing the film at 6 a.m. ET.
