1967: 'The Flying Nun' Soars onto ABC
September 7, 2012  | By Christy Slewinski

On this day in 1967, ABC introduced The Flying Nun, starring Sally Field. The heavenly show was Field's second sitcom, produced on the heels of her first series, Gidget

The show revolved around a community of nuns in a Puerto Rican convent whose quiet life is disrupted by Sister Bertrille, a novice, fish-out-of-water nun whose small stature and starched cornette allowed her to fly. Sister Bertrille uses her uncanny ability to help her fellow sisters, the convent students and local residents.

The Flying Nun's supporting cast included Madeleine Sherwood as Reverend Mother Placido, Marge Redmond as Sister Jacqueline and Selly Morrison as Sister Sixto.

The series ran for three seasons.
