This day in 1966 marked the 38th Annual Academy Awards, the first Oscar awards ceremony to be broadcast in color.
Hosted by Bob Hope, the ceremony was held at the Santa Monica Civic Auditorium and presented on ABC. Art directors Alexander Golitzen and William Morris lined the back of the stage with 42 water fountains to add extra impact to the color broadcast.
Key winners included Best Actor Lee Marvin for Cat Ballou, Best Actress Julie Christie for Darling, Best Supporting Actor Martin Balsam for A Thousand Clowns and Best Supporting Actress Shelley Winters for A Patch of Blue. Best Picture honors went to The Sound of Music, which won four additional statuettes that evening.
