On this day in 1987, NBC cancelled the Hill Street Blues spinoff, Beverly Hills Buntz. The dramedy starred future NYPD Blue favorite Dennis Franz as cop-turned-private eye Norman Buntz. The show, created by David Milch and Jeffery Lewis, co-starred Peter Jurasik and Dana Wheeler-Nicholson.

The network had high hopes for the series, but the show failed to capture audience interest. Of the 13 episodes produced, only nine aired.

And another MTM show hidden in the vaults of Fox forever.Franz did a stint in the first season of Hill Street as a bad guy-a real bad cop.That arc solidified for this viewer how good Blues could be.His return as the questionably ethical Buntz was a nice turn,but unlike Ed Asner taking his Lou Grant charcter from comedic to dramitic,Franz and the script writers had a more difficult time in making Buntz a complete fool when he went West.In between?Franz was part of the ambitious MTM series about a minor league ball team,Bay City Blues( ESPN Classic spools all eight filmed episodes from time to time).And then Dennis was given Andy Sipowicz on NYPD Blue and became the moral compass,with sometimes difficulty finding true North.Sorely missed in these days of modern police shows.
