1992: 'The Golden Girls' Ends its Run on NBC
On this day in 1992, The Golden Girls wrapped its seventh and final season.
The series starred Betty White and former Maude co-stars Rue McClanahan and Bea Arthur as Miami housemates navigating the retirement-age singles scene. (White and McClanahan, incidentally, also co-starred in the NBC series, Mama's Family.) Residing with the widowed Rose Nylund and Blanche Devereaux (played by White and McClanahan) was Estelle Getty's character, Sophia Petrillo, the mother of Arthur's character, divorcee Dorothy Zbornak.
The series spent six consecutive seasons in the Nielsen Top 10, dropping to No. 30 in its seventh and final season. Following the show's end, White, McClanahan and Getty reprised their Golden Girls roles in the CBS series, The Golden Palace. The show, which co-starred Cheech Marin and Don Cheadle, ran just one season.
