1974: CBS Says Goodbye to 'The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour'
This day in 1974 marked the final telecast of The Sonny & Cher Comedy Hour on CBS.
The variety series, starring husband-and-wife entertainers Sonny Bono and single-moniker Cher, was originally a summer replacement series in 1971, but its popularity earned it a spot on the network's regular prime-time schedule.
The show featured songs, skits and guest stars ranging from Telly Savalas and Ronald Reagan to Carol Burnett, George Burns and Phyllis Diller. Each show ended with Sonny and Cher performing a rendition of "I Got You Babe."
The series ran for four seasons, and was scheduled to return for a fifth when it was revealed that the show's stars were separating and heading for divorce.
