1954: 'Martin Kane, Private Eye' Ends
This day in 1954 marked the final telecast of the NBC detective drama, Martin Kane, Private Eye.
The series was presented as a live broadcast, sponsored by the United States Tobacco Company. Its original star, William Gargan, played the title role for the show's first two seasons. Actors Lloyd Nolan, Lee Tracy and Mark Stevens each starred for a subsequent season.
NBC also produced a radio version of the show, which ran from 1949 through 1952. While the role of Martin Kane was played by the same actor on both radio and television, the scripts were unique for each medium.
