On this day in 1958, NBC launched the western, Jefferson Drum. The series starred baseball-player-turned-actor Jeff Richards as a frontier newspaper editor who used his publishing platform to address issues in his 1850s mining town, but was an equally skilled gunslinger when the situation warranted.

The series was co-written by future Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry.
