On this day in 1989, PBS affiliate WNET introduced the hit children's series, Shining Time Station, featuring the still-popular Thomas the Tank Engine character.
Shining Time Station creators Britt Allcroft and Rick Siggelkow utilized episodes of their hit British show Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends within the new series, and enlisted Thomas the Tank Engine's unseen narrator, Ringo Starr, to appear on camera in Shining Time Station as the character Mr. Conductor. Starr was replaced by George Carlin after the first season. Didi Conn played the station manager, Stacy Jones.
The show ran three seasons, but was shown in reruns for several years after its cancellation on PBS, as well as cable's Fox Family and Nick Jr.
