1993: CBS Presents 'Alex Haley's Queen'

On this day in 1993, CBS aired part one of the three-part miniseries, Alex Haley's Queen, an adaptation of Haley's novel Queen: The Story of an American Family.
Queen chronicles the life of the Roots author's paternal grandmother, Queen Jackson Haley, the daughter of a female slave and a plantation owner's son, who battled prejudice from both blacks and whites in post-Civil War America. The series served as a breakout role for its star, Halle Berry.
The cast also included Jasmine Guy as Queen's mother, Easter, and Tim Daly as her father, James Jackson, Jr. Danny Glover portrayed her eventual husband, Alec Haley. The miniseries also starred Martin Sheen, Ann-Margret, Patricia Clarkson, Paul Winfield, Ossie Davis, Victor Garber, George Grizzard, Dennis Haysbert, Jane Krakowski, and Raven-Symoné.
