It's Another British Invasion: The Beatles Are Streaming! The Beatles Are Streaming!
Our own David Hinckley already has written about the significance of The Beatles finally offering their music and video catalogue on streaming sites (read his story in his All Along the Watchtower). But where to begin, with such a voluminous and outstanding catalogue at your disposal? I suggest here: a relative rarity called “Hey Bulldog,” recorded by The Beatles in 1968, and included on the Yellow Submarine soundtrack album. It was edited out of the American prints of the film originally, though, and video footage shot of the group recording it in the studio was used as a music video – but for another song entirely, as asynchronous video images for a music video of “Lady Madonna.” In 1999, when the “Hey Bulldog” animated sequence was reinserted into the movie Yellow Submarine, the original video footage was assembled and re-edited as well, into an actual “Hey Bulldog” music video. This is it – one of the few times The Beatles were filmed recording an actual music track. You can buy all the videos in a newly-released compilation, Beatles 1+ here. – David Bianculli
