The Disrupted Disrupter
April 8, 2018  | By Eric Gould

The accolades have been appropriately coming this week on the passing of Steven Bochco (1943 – 2018), producer and creator of two series– Hill Street Blues and NYPD Blue – that changed the tone of broadcast and cable dramas to came after them. Bochco’s techniques, which included hand-held camera shots and dialogue evoking cinéma vérité, created a bold authenticity that audiences flocked to. In a series of interviews for Archive of American Television in 2002, Bochco reveals the conflicts amongst cast and producers of Hill Street Blues (1981-87) and how he persevered to keep what he knew was lightning in a bottle, alive. – Eric Gould
