The Next (Big?) Thing
December 12, 2013  | By Eric Gould

Joseph Gordon-Levitt has a new show premiering January 18, 2014 on the upstart cable channel Pivot TV. Titled after his web project, the show HITRECORD ON TV is billed as a 30-minute variety show. But forget the Carol Burnett kind: HITRECORD is sort of a crowd-sourced multi-media concept where short films and animation are collaborative. A clip or text or idea is chosen by Gordon-Levitt and his editors, then the hitrecord.org member-artist community pitch editing, score and content contributions to create the final piece. The TV show is based on itinerant performance events held by HITRECORD in theaters and dive bars that also feature live music and interviews. Shown here is a piece called “Flickering Lights” that features all kinds of submitted clips of, well, you know. There’s a nice buzz here, with a spirit of new media and the pulse of fringe video essays by Chris Marker and other video pioneers. We’ll see what kind of audience the show generates, and you have to admit…the kid has spunk. –EG
