Up Close and Satirical
June 1, 2016  | By Eric Gould

The new summer variety series Maya and Marty premiered last night, (Tuesday, 3/31) and first impressions of this genre revival were very good. The variety show may yet rise again. The production, by Lorne Michaels, did smack a touch of Saturday Night Live-lite but that wasn't necessarily a bad thing, and it's clear Maya Rudolph and Martin Short are top guns, easily circling for the comedy kill in most every sketch. Short reprised his old Jiminy Glick character, an unwitting, ingratiating, overweight Hollywood reporter who "compliments" his subjects with a chain of earnest, back-handed insults. The victim here is Larry David and while Short's improv skills make the whole bit, it is David's inability to do the interview straight that is the best part. We're assuming Rudolph will bring back Donatello Versace next... Get Out!!! --Eric Gould
