Walking Sticks
August 23, 2015  | By Eric Gould

Once in a while there’s just a plain, documentary shot that’s mesmerizing. This silent clip is one of Dutch artist Theo Jansen’s visionary and eerie wind-blown walking sculptures, which make a marriage of art and technology. Jansen’s termed the somewhat ghostly skeletons Strandbeest, which seem at the same time elegant, a bit mad, and a bit zombie Walking Dead. The beasts were at Art Basel in Miami last year and will be on exhibit at The Peabody Essex Museum north of Boston next month, kicking off their first major U.S. tour. (Some other members of the Strandbeest family are here on YouTube and Jansen's TED Conference presentation is here.—Eric Gould
