Here’s an off-beat angle on the story of The Beatles first appearance on The Ed Sullivan Show in 1964: Sullivan first saw the Fab Four on the CBS Evening News with Walter Cronkite. The CBS story on the UK mania over the young group got Sullivan’s immediate attention and set the historic U.S. debut booking in motion. It also got Cronkite’s daughters backstage access to the live broadcast and photos with the band. Does Cronkite get a footnote in The Beatles' U.S. story? Yeah, yeah, yeah. –EG
