Winds of Change
Since two of the TVWW editors grew up in Florida in the ‘60s (and soldiered through black and white broadcasting and paper tracking maps) it’s worthwhile noting that while modern storm coverage is wall-to-wall, it shouldn’t be taken for granted. Consider Hurricane Donna, a category 4 storm that plowed through the Florida Keys on this same date (September 10) in 1960, causing more than 20 fatalities in the US. This recap, which aired a couple of days later, was hosted by weatherman Bill Ross on WCKT in Miami – without satellite tracking, Periscope feeds and of course, news anchors standing outside in gale force winds. –Eric Gould
