THE WEATHER CHANNEL 30th ANNIVERSARY
May 2, 2012  | By David Bianculli  | 1 comment

Weather Channel, 6:00 a.m. ET

On May 2, 1982, The Weather Channel began its nonstop programming cycle with a bare-bones budget and approach that made C-SPAN look like Donald Trump’s bedroom. You can see an image from the network’s opening seconds at left. To see more moments from throughout the channel’s 30-year history, tune in all day today, and be entertained by the interstitials. All hurricanes, some of the time!

They used to forecast the weather. These days, they do everything but. Yes, they still squeeze in the occasional forecast, but what a waste of bandwidth most of the time. Cute on-camera folks, Facebook reports, packages from local affiliates, Twitter trends, half-hour specials about penguins, anything to avoid what they're ostensibly there to do.

Perhaps their new anniversary slogan should be: "Weather you like it or not."
