I REMEMBER MAMA
June 20, 2012  | By David Bianculli  | 1 comment

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

This 1948 movie, an adaptation of a Broadway play that itself was adapted from a novel, is like a Norwegian turn-of-the-century version of The Wonder Years: an adult narrator, looking back fondly on the formative years of childhood. Irene Dunne and Barbara Bel Geddes (who later played Miss Ellie on the original Dallas) star – and this film inspired TV’s first spinoff from a movie, 1949’s popular Mama, starring Peggy Wood.

I LOVE this movie. Think I first saw it in school at 13 - I had a history teacher who showed us many popular culture films: flash gordan was one, but I digress. My family was imigrant Irish, but so much of this rings true, Uncle Chris, the Aunts, The mother's role in the security of the children, the striving for success, I think this movie should be part of every 4th of July celebration. It's not a mother's or father's day film, but a film about what it means to become an american family.
