NATURE: "CRACKING THE KOALA CODE"
May 16, 2012  | By David Bianculli  | 6 comments

PBS, 8:00 p.m. ET

Autobiographical aside: When I was a little kid in the mid-Fifties (yeah, I know, but I’m still alive), one of the first children’s books I read, and still remember vividly, was a watercolor-illustrated book about koala bears, lounging around in eucalyptus trees. When I was three, the word “eucalyptus” was sheer magic. (If anyone can figure out which book I was reading, I’ll come up with a suitable TV-related prize.) Today, I know that koalas are marsupials, not bears – but I know nothing about their bellowing language, which is what’s being studied in this new program about the koalas of Brisbane, Australia. Check local listings.

If it is similar to Bobbly Rubbernose it is possibly Two-Thumbs The Koala by Leslie rees...

Q
Is it possible the book you are describing is Bobby Rubbernose by Timothy Kay and illustrated by Rufus Morris?

No, it's not. But the style is closer... Who would have thought koala hunting could be this hard? Or this much fun?

Or it could be one of the four listed here - http://www.badgerbooks.com.au/browse-books/25/animals/5/

My guess is that it's Mr. Koala Bear by Elisabeth MacIntyre published in 1954 by Scribner New York. I can't pull up a picture of it, but does this description sound correct? https://www.kirkusreviews.com/book-reviews/elisabeth-macintyre/mr-koala-bear/#review

Or possibly "Bear Party" by the same author? http://www.amazon.com/Bear-Party-Picture-Puffin-books/dp/0140507930

Thanks for both those suggestions -- but the book I'm trying to locate had koalas without clothes. Just lounging around in trees. But boy, do I appreciate the effort. Who would have thought I'd get so many kind, smart koala-book suggestions?

Could it be "The Bears of Koala Park" by William Pene du Bois? http://www.etsy.com/listing/86616956/the-bears-of-koala-park-and-william-pene
