BEACHES
January 21, 2017  | By David Bianculli

Lifetime, 8:00 p.m. ET

In 1988, the movie Beaches made quite a splash – not only for the leading performances by Bette Midler and Barbara Hershey as lifelong friends, but for the movie’s most famous song from the soundtrack, “Wind Beneath My Wings.” The film was directed by the late Garry Marshall, who also directed Pretty Woman and produced TV’s original The Odd Couple, as well as Happy Days, Laverne & Shirley, and Mork & Mindy. This 2016 Lifetime movie remake is directed by Allison Anders, whose resume includes other stories about women who are the closest of friends, including episodes of TV’s Sex and the City and The L Word. And this new Beaches stars, in the leading roles, Idina Menzel and Nia Long. For full reviews, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes and David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.
