This 2016 movie, sort of a cross between The X-Men and a Dickensian boarding house, is a Tim Burton film that almost got unnoticed as a Tim Burton film, but it’s clearly got his take on it – and, like Barry Sonnenfeld with The Addams Family and A Series of Unfortunate Events, benefits greatly from his visual playfulness. Eva Green, so great in Showtime’s Penny Dreadful (and also prominent in Burton’s own, less impressive Dark Shadows remake), stars as the title character. Her colorful costars include Samuel L. Jackson, Judi Dench, and Allison Janney.
