THE HEART GUY
June 5, 2017  | By David Bianculli  | 84 comments

Acorn TV, 3:00 a.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: Well, it’s the premiere in the U.S., anyway. But in its native Australia, the series introduced here until the title The Heart Guy has been running under the name of Doctor Doctor. Either way, Rodger Corser stars as Hugh Knight, a competent young heart surgeon and inveterate party animal who’s forced to return to his sleepy small town of Whyhope. That basic plot makes this series, by any other name, a sort of cross between Northern Exposure (where a young New York doctor worked off student loans by setting up temporarily practice in small-town Alaska) and Justified (where a deputy U.S. marshal was reprimanded for questionable behavior by being sent back to investigate crimes in his native Kentucky foothills). For a full review, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.

Except for the McGuffin, a big city sophisticate being exiled to a small town, I don't see Northern Exposure, Justified, or even Doc Martin being comparable. It's just a good show, good enough that after having watched season one on PBS and finding no season two on the program grid. I went on-line and binge-watched season two and a week later, I did the same thing for season three. I pretty much concur with the praise from the other commenters and from the several unresolved story issues at the end of season three, I'm optimistic about there being a season four coming. The bad news is that according to epguides.com, the first three seasons ran (presumably in Australia) a year apart, so it looks like it'll be the end of 2019 of maybe early in 2020 before we'll get to see season four.

The Heart Guy is well-written, and brilliantly edited. The stories all characters are fascinating - it is full of humor and charm. Hugh Knight is a lovable and attractive character, and all the rest are as well. I adore Meryl, and enjoy her position in the family. The scenery and weather gorgeous. I love Australian characters, settings. Please make more seasons. I have seen all three--they could go on and on,

I now live in the USA, but grew up in Broken Hill, NSW, and originally watched show because it was Aussie. One show, first series, I was completely hooked! Love it. Love the characters! Watched series 3 in two and a half days! Now I'm waiting with bated breath for series 4! ? The Aussies know how to direct, produce and write great scripts and find great actors that I've fallen in love with! ??
