This 1948 movie, presented by TCM tonight as one of “The Essentials,” was good enough to win Oscars for two generations of the same family. Walter Huston, who plays one of three less than trustworthy prospectors on the trail of the same reputed stash of gold, won for Best Supporting Actor – and his son, John Huston, won two Oscars of his own, for writing the screenplay and as Best Director. Also contributing greatly to this wonderful Western, though not walking away with statuettes: Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt.
