Paul Simon’s Graceland album was released in 1986, and took the music industry by storm. Some argued he was taking advantage of indigenous music and artists, others thought he was inadvertently supporting apartheid. But what he was doing was making a terrific album, and collaborating globally in a way that opened the door even more for what we now commonly call “world music.” All I know is, when the new-fangled technological miracle known as the compact disc finally was launched in the States, the first CD I bought, to test out the sonics, was Graceland. Tonight, this one-hour Classic Albums special presents a track-by-track breakdown, of the music and the politics.
