SERIES PREMIERE: Happy Thanksgiving. Unveiling, for some reason, on Thanksgiving Day, filmmaker Spike Lee’s newest “joint” is a 10-part TV reexamination of his 1986 breakthrough film, She’s Gotta Have It. DaWanda Wise is cast in the role of Nola Darling, who navigates the streets of Fort Greene in Brooklyn as fluidly as she does the attentions of a series of eager suitors. In the Eighties, this character, and this movie, were all about power dynamics between men and woman, and the pervasive influence of hip-hop culture1986. In this new version, it still is, but the message, and Nora, are even more deeply developed. Lee directs every episode, but the writers’ room consists of Lee’s wife and fellow executive producer, Tonya Lewis Lee, as well as Lynn Nottage, Rahda Blank, Eisa Davis and Joie Lee. In this new version, Nora’s pursuers include Lyriq Bent as Jamie, Cleo Anthony as Greer, and Hamilton actor Anthony Ramos as Mars, the fast-talking character made famous by Spike Lee in the original movie.
