A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS
November 30, 2017  | By David Bianculli

ABC, 8:00 p.m. ET

Over the years, this 1965 animated special, the first to bring Charles M. Schulz’s Peanuts gang to television, has bounced from one network to another, been edited and shortened and then restored – but it’s been shown every year, making it one of the last surviving annual TV holiday and family traditions. As such, please honor it, gather the family, and watch together. And take the opportunity to use it as a teachable moment: Not only to hear Charlie Brown and Linus discuss the true meaning of Christmas, but also to explain, to the youngest kids and grandkids who watch all their TV shows and shorts on streaming services, what a “commercial” is.
