BUTTERFIELD 8
March 15, 2018  | By David Bianculli  | 1 comment

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

Back in 1960, when many phone numbers were still identified by their exchanges (remember the hit big-band song “PA-6 5000”?), Elizabeth Taylor starred as a high-priced Manhattan call girl in Butterfield 8. The title of the movie referred to her phone exchange, not her name or a particular exotic specialty. Her character’s name? Gloria Wandrous, which is salacious enough on its own. One of Taylor’s co-stars in this film, by the way, is Eddie Fisher, with whom she was having a scandalous affair after the sudden death of her husband Mike Todd, Fisher’s best friend.

I'm an old-ish guy and Elizabeth Taylor was a big star when I was growing up. I loved her in The Taming of the Shrew and Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf? and others. For some reason, I've never seen Butterfield 8, although I was 11 years old when it came out and I'm sure my mom wouldn't have let me see it. I know I tried at the advent of VHS tapes but never finished it. Maybe it's time?
