DOCUMENTARY PREMIERE: Part 1 of 2. This two-part, five-hour documentary profile of comedian Garry Shandling comes from filmmaker Judd Apatow, one of the many, many people Shandling befriended and mentored over his long, pioneering career in show business. This biographical study, dipping into Shandling’s private diaries and home movies, captures it all, from the tragic loss of his brother in early childhood to his pushing-the-envelope cable TV work on Showtime’s It’s Garry Shandling’s Show to HBO’s The Larry Sanders Show. And it’s all here, in an artfully compiled two-parter (concluding tomorrow night) that is surprisingly, and unforgettably, spiritual and inspirational.
