ANDREW LLOYD WEBBER: TRIBUTE TO A SUPERSTAR
March 28, 2018  | By David Bianculli  | 1 comment

NBC, 10:00 p.m. ET

Because, and only because, NBC is presenting a special concert musical called Jesus Christ Superstar Live! this weekend, the network is presenting another special tonight, a salute to the composer of that musical’s music. (The lyrics are by Tim Rice, who apparently deserves much lower billing here.) When it first appeared in 1970, Jesus Christ Superstar was a rock opera, existing first on vinyl (Google it, kids) before finally working its way to Broadway, and launching Webber’s international musical career in the process. Since then, he’s written the music for Cats, Phantom of the Opera, Evita, School of Rock, and others. And among those paying tribute tonight is the current hottest composer on Broadway, Lin-Manuel Miranda.

Don't lose the connection between Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Superstar: Buffy's star, Anthony Stewart Head, who played Rupert Giles on Buffy is not only musically trained, but he is also the younger brother of the Superstar's first Judas, Murray Head. Anthony's singing in the musical Buffy episode is a standout. Murray's performance on the aforementioned vinyl was very big in the day.
