LEMONY SNICKET’S A SERIES OF UNFORTUNATE EVENTS
March 30, 2018  | By David Bianculli

Netflix, 3:00 a.m. ET

SEASON PREMIERE: Daniel Handler’s Unfortunate Events books, written under his playful pen name of Lemony Snicket, are delightfully dark. And so is this series, which returns for Season 2 picking up just where it left off in the sordid series about three orphaned children. The first two episodes are given to “The Austere Academy,” in which the siblings’ nemesis, Count Olaf, infiltrates their dour new school as a gym teacher with questionably Far East origins. Barry Sonnenfeld and Handler provide the visual and narrative tone of this delightful series, even as they seem to be pushed to the margins behind the scenes. And Neil Patrick Harris, as the unconvincingly chameleonic Olaf, is plenty of fun all by himself. But the children, and the guest stars, and the production design all make this one of Netflix’s tastiest returning treats.
