Conan O’Brien’s field trips, like David Letterman’s, always showcase him at his best. And in these specials where Conan visits other countries and cultures, his self-deprecation and natural curiosity and geniality combine to make for great comic travelogues. I don’t know where he’s visiting in this trip to Italy, outside of Rome and a few other major tourist destinations. I’d love it if he visits the small inland mountain village, about where the ankle would be in Italy’s boot, of San Martino d’Agri – the remote home of my paternal grandparents. But the odds, like the city streets there, are steep.
