WALTER MATTHAU SALUTE
August 9, 2018  | By David Bianculli  | 1 comment

TCM, 6:00 a.m. ET

Today’s saluted TCM star is Walter Matthau, whose durable and impressive career is on display with samples from across his celluloid resume. My personal favorites include1963’s Charade at noon ET, 1964’s Fail-Safe at 4 p.m. ET, 1975’s The Sunshine Boys at 6 p.m. ET, and the classic 1968 Neil Simon comedy classic, The Odd Couple, co-starring Jack Lemmon (pictured), at 8 p.m. ET. And wait, as they so often say on TV, that’s not all: at 12:15 a.m. ET comes yet another stellar Matthau movie, 1974’s thrilling The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. Literally, you could watch Matthau all night – and tonight, since there’s virtually nothing else of quality on TV, you should.

I was at my local library, looking to see if they had any new DVD's to borrow and watch, and found a copy of Charley Varrick, from 1973 I think. I watched it one weekend a couple of months ago, and remembered how good it is. One of Don Segel's products from that era and I read where Matthau wasn't crazy about the results of it--the whole story confused him. I'm not sure where that came from, but there's a great story there and some amazing actors that almost steal the movie from him, including Sheree North, Jaqueline Scott, Joe Don Baker, Andy Robinson and Woodrow Parfrey. I see on ImdB that there was a documentary made about the movie, in 2015. Looks interesting but doesn't seem to be available to buy or rent.
