A NIGHT AT THE OPERA
September 12, 2018  | By David Bianculli

TCM, 6:00 p.m. ET

Ah, it’s Otis. B. Driftwood and company – said company being Fiorello and Tomasso – who combine forces to make this 1935 movie one of the funniest comedies of that or any other decade. It’s because, of course, Tomasso is played by Harpo, Fiorello by Chico, and Driftwood by Groucho, and the Marx Brothers, as they’re known collectively, are as good as it gets. Oh, and the female lead here is Kitty Carlisle, which explained to me, many years after I watched her as a panelist on To Tell the Truth, what she had done to earn that seat.
