THE VOICE
December 18, 2018  | By David Bianculli

NBC, 8:00 p.m. ET

SEASON FINALE: Three of the four surviving Voice finalists who sang last night are country   artists, each coming at the genre from a different perspective: rock-flavored and growly-voiced Chris Kroeze, sweet and traditional Chevel Shepherd, and soulful Kirk Jay. The remaining finalist, Kennedy Holmes, is the youngest in the competition, having just turned 14, and is more mainstream pop, rock and hip-hop. Overall, this Final 4 did so well with their respective trio of songs that I’d be happy with any of them being voted the winner tonight – but in Holmes’ final number closing out the night, a cover of Ariana Grande’s “Confident” (pictured), Holmes put on a powder keg show, dancing as well as singing in a way that outshone and overshadowed every other performance that evening, from her or her competitors. Anyone could win in tonight’s results finale, but based on last night’s closer, Kennedy Holmes should. And if the country-flavored finalist contestants split their votes, she will.
