DEADLY CLASS
January 16, 2019  | By David Bianculli

Syfy, 10:00 p.m. ET

SERIES PREMIERE: This is not a recommendation. This new Syfy series is set in the 1980s, which allows for some enjoyable period music played on the soundtrack and as part of the natural atmosphere. It’s about a school for misfits and outcasts with special talents and powers, and is based on the 2014 graphic novel series by Rick Remender (who’s one of the executive producers and overseers here) and his several artist co-creators. Time and sensitivities have resulted in some changes for TV (guns no longer are brandished openly in school), but not others (white supremacists remain one of the school’s dominant social cliques). The imagery, attractively adapted for television, is the main star of tonight’s series premiere, with an early cast standout being Maria Gabriela de Faria as the sometimes elaborately made-up Maria (pictured). But the story? It’s like a samurai school Freaks and Geeks – but neither as inventive nor as entertaining as that might sound. For full reviews, see David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower and Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes.
