Reality show competition series are funny gambles. If they catch on quickly, like ABC’s Who Wants to Be a Millionaire and Fox’s American Idol and NBC’s The Voice, they can change the fortunes of an entire network – and you can take that word, “fortunes,” both figuratively and literally. Well, it looks like The Masked Singer, an American version of the South Korean singing competition series, has done just that for Fox, quickly becoming the most popular new show of the season. And it’s done that with such “celebrity judges” as Jenny McCarthy and Ken Jeong, and with such unmasked “celebrity contestants” as, thus far (Spoiler Alert: stop reading if you don’t want to know who’s been revealed behind the elaborate costumes), athletes Antonio Brown and Terry Bradshaw, and comics Tommy Chong and Margaret Cho. Sooner or later, the field will narrow enough to begin eliminating actual singers, and who will be unmasked then? Is there a Gladys Knight in there? A La Toya Jackson? Anyway, tonight it’s a new type of challenge duel, as Lion and Unicorn team up to do battle with Alien (pictured, but otherwise unidentified) and Rabbit.
