SEASON FINALE: This is the Season 9 finale of this impressively acted Showtime series (itself an Americanized version of a British series, which, like NBC’s U.S. version of The Office, far outlasted the original). It also happens to be the final episode co-starring Emmy Rossum as Fiona, eldest daughter of the scrappy Gallagher clan. Fiona has had a brutal season, hitting rock bottom and sinking even below that, but last week’s show ended with a chance encounter that gives her character a way out – of her dilemma and, in a larger context, out of this series. It’s been a very strong nine-year run, and Rossum has been believable, and often heart-wrenching, throughout. Fiona and Rossum both deserve a proper sendoff. Tonight, they get it.
