YOUNG FRANKENSTEIN
March 15, 2019  | By David Bianculli

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

One of the funniest film spoofs ever made, 1974’s Young Frankenstein, directed by Mel Brooks (who co-wrote the screenplay with star Gene Wilder), also is one of the most reverent. Brooks and Wilder pull iconic bits of inspiration from not only the original Frankenstein film, but its sequels, to mount and nail its most iconic set pieces. Wilder is sheer comic genius. Then again, so are Peter Boyle, Madeline Kahn, Cloris Leachman, Marty Feldman, Teri Garr – and, of course, Brooks himself.
