FOSSE/VERDON
April 9, 2019  | By David Bianculli

FX, 10:00 p.m. ET

MINISERIES PREMIERE: Sam Rockwell plays choreographer and director Bob Fosse, and Michelle Williams plays dancer and actress (and, for a time, one of Fosse’s wives) Gwen Verdon. Together, they propel this new limited drama series, which sets out to absorb both the content and tone of Fosse’s own 1979 movie All That Jazz. Sometimes it’s very successful, and this Fosse/Verdon series certainly is entertaining on its own merits, in large part because of Williams’ uncannily convincing portrayal of Verdon. But I’ve seen only half the episodes, and need to see the rest before deciding for sure whether this drama sticks its landing and, despite input from a small army of writers and directors, emerges with an overall message and unified voice. But watch it? Absolutely. For my full review on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, visit the Fresh Air website. And for  full reviews here, see Ed Bark's Uncle Barky's Bytes and David Hinckley's All Along the Watchtower.
