SINGIN' IN THE RAIN
April 13, 2019  | By David Bianculli  | 1 comment

TCM, 8:00 p.m. ET

The two films shown by TCM tonight in prime time happen to be films I showcase when teaching early film history at Rowan University. Even though 1952’s Singin’ in the Rain is a bit too “young” for a class that’s supposed to culminate with 1941’s Citizen Kane, I slip it in there anyway – because we spend so much time on silent films and the transition to sound, the comic treatment of it in Rain is something they newly enjoy in context. Besides, Gene Kelly singing and dancing the title song? What else was the cinema made for?

I have an adult daughter, age 36, who discovered Singin’ In The Rain when she was about 12 years old, and she and her friend Sadie could be found quite often watching it (and Grease), singing the soundtrack to both and quite often included the dialogue. I have always been a big Debbie Reynolds fan and so is my daughter still. I had never seen “Rain” except on VHS and then on DVD’s until about 2 years ago when Fathom Events showed it in a local theater and I took my daughter and daughter-in-law to see it. I lived in Las Vegas for a few years and was able to see Debbie do her shows there a few times and she always made sure to have lots of music from Singin’ In The Rain. Nothing better!
