VEEP
May 12, 2019  | By David Bianculli

SERIES FINALE: After seven seasons and 17 Emmys, Veep ends its run tonight – with more Emmys to come, no doubt, at the ceremonies later this year. Julia Louis-Dreyfus is this generation’s perfectly pitched female sitcom star, managing to play unlikable characters while always retaining our sympathies. She’s the comedy equivalent of Bryan Cranston’s Walter White – and I’m hoping her Selina Meyer gets just as perfect a sendoff. And as for her on-camera support staff, the whole gaggle of them deserve praise and honors. Tony Hale and Gary Cole and Anna Chlumsky make me laugh the most, but I’m delighted, and surprised, by them all. For my appreciation on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, hosting a show that included interviews with both Louis-Dreyfus and Hale, as well as Veep show runner David Mandel, visit the Fresh Air website.
