SERIES PREMIERE: This new crime series – and that’s hardly its only genre description, since its tone and content are so weird – is from Nicholas Winding Refn, who takes for apparent inspiration pieces from David Lynch and Quentin Tarantino, but removes all the music and most of the quirky characters. The pace is so deliberately slow, it makes Michelangelo Antonioni’s movies seem like they’re on fast-forward, and Refn, the Danish filmmaker who also directed The Neon Demon, employs more slow pans and tracking shots than Ken Burns. Miles Teller stars as a Los Angeles police officer with a slippery moral code, and while there’s very little about this series to recommend, it’s somehow compelling. Even if we weren’t consciously looking for it, we may have just found the modern, Danish Ed Wood.
