Hope springs eternal. Or, at least, tonight on TCM, Hope springs overnight. It’s Bob Hope night on TCM, with six of his movies presented in a very mirthful merrython. The laughs begin at 8 p.m. ET with 193’s The Cat and the Canary, the film that established Hope’s movie-star status. Paulette Goddard and Gale Sondergaard co-star in this haunted-house comedy, one of several Hope would make, and remake, over his career.

In the place of this week’s Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., ABC presents a self-congratulatory Marvel special that shows how the company emerged from pulp comics to box-office dominance. It’ll be fun if it includes the company’s rare but glaring missteps, like the “lost” film version of The Fantastic Four, or the early, terrible TV versions of such heroes as Nick Fury and, yes, Spider-Man.

At 10 p.m., CBS, NBC and ABC present prime-time specials keyed to the midterm election results. Watch your favorite, or tune in earlier to CNN, Fox News or MSNBC.  Or, for that matter, tune in later to Comedy Central where, beginning at 11 p.m. ET, both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert preside over live, irreverent election coverage.

Bobby (Mark Boone Junior) is gaining screen time, but losing body parts, as the hostage at the center of this season’s latest, most ruthless faceoff. It all makes you wonder how angry Jax will get, and what he might do, when he finds out that all the current conflicts were generated by his lying, murderous mother, Gemma (Katey Sagal). And he has to find out. This is the final season for Sons of Anarchy, and there’s no way the series can end with that plot thread left untied.

In the series premiere, Jim Gordon was ordered to kill Oswald Cobblepot to demonstrate loyalty. Gordon faked the death instead, and warned Oswald to stay far away from Gotham City. But he hasn’t – and tonight, with dire consequences, the penguins come home to roost.

Henry’s spell has infected Katrina – which means bad news for Katrina, and those around her, unless Ichabod and Abbie can ride to the rescue. But on what? All the horses seem to be claimed already.

This new series has delighted most of those who have tuned in to sample it, and don’t expect that to stop, or enthusiasms to dampen. This show has proven, already, that the wit and likability of its premiere episode, and the charisma of Gina Rodriguez as its titular star, were no early, one-shot flukes. So stay tuned.

Part 2 of 2. Frances McDormand stars in this quietly intense character study, which combines tenderness, comedy and caustic drama in such unusual proportions, often simultaneously. Tonight, Bill Murray shows up as yet another interesting resident of the small community McDormand’s Olive calls home – but it’s McDormand, at the center of this quiet storm of an interwoven story, who really holds everything together. For my full review on NPR’s Fresh Air with Terry Gross, vis

Last week, we learned what, or more precisely who, was chained behind Liz’s chained-up door. So now what? That’s the question – and tonight, as a hit man aims to kill an American scientist, Liz (Megan Boone) ponders the answer.
