This 1961 movie was the first time, but not the last, that Paul Newman played the character of pool hustler Eddie Felson. He’s wonderful here – a movie star gleaming at full wattage – but watch, too, for his felt-table adversary: Jackie Gleason, doing an impressive star turn of his own as Minnesota Fats. And this is before CGI, so the long shots where you see Gleason, especially, sinking those shots? He’s doing it.
