Last week’s episode ended with Ray (Liev Schreiber) managing to free his brother Terry (Eddie Marsan) from prison. Ray did it, though, by entering a sort of prison of his own, and signing himself on as a full-time employee of sinister multi-millionaire Malcolm Finney (Ian McShane,so superb in HBO’s Deadwood) and his flinty daughter, Paige (Katie Holmes, pictured, getting a chance here to play much tougher than usual).

The jump-ahead-a-few-years trick that propelled this new season of Masters of Sex has allowed the writers not only to get more quickly to the publication of the controversial Masters & Johnson study, but also to reconfigure the love lives and situations of its primary and secondary characters. Last week we learned the face of Beau Bridges’ closeted professor, Barton Scully – and tonight, we revisit Barton’s ex-wife, played so tenderly by Allison Janney. And this year (or in

This 2004 movie is much smarter, and funnier, than the usual stoner comedy – and part of it was the way it gave Neil Patrick Harris the opportunity to reboot his image, instantly and delightfully, shifting from former Doogie Howser, M.D. child star to grown-up mischievous imp. (Which he’s pretty much honed, and perfected, ever since.) Followed at 10 p.m. by the 2008 sequel, Harold & Kumar Escape from Guantanamo Bay. John Cho and Kal Penn star.

If you haven’t seen this 2014 movie yet, please, please do so now. Michael Keaton stars as a former cinematic superhero star, hoping to make his comeback by starring in a Broadway play. Director Alejandro Inarritu filmed this uniquely paced film with an approach – more of a metaphor than a gimmick, and employed superbly throughout – that gives it the impression of being filmed in one continuous take. And even though the pieces of the film actually are lengthy chunks slyly splic

Today TCM salutes Gene Tierney, showing a dozen of her films – the centerpiece being tonight’s entry in “The Essentials”: 1947’s The Ghost and Mrs. Muir. Tierney plays the titular Mrs. Muir, a young widow who acquires a seaside cottage – and Rex Harrison plays the ghost, a former sea captain who comes with the haunted house, and has no intention of leaving. When I was a teen, I remember watching the 1968 TV remake, starring Hope Lange and Edward Mulhare. Back

Tonight’s episode follows first responders as they deal with several emergencies – ones that, by coincidence, hit a little too close to home for our immediate and extended TVWW family. There’s a boy who’s running for a school bus when he’s hit by a motorist (Eric, don’t watch this), a motorcyclist who’s pinned under an SUV (Ron, don’t watch this), and a pregnant woman with a very traumatic labor (Kristin, don’t watch this). Everybody else, th

At this point in these proceedings, the elongated summer Television Critics Association "press tour" still seems to be stretching from here to eternity. Which seems like an apt time to roll out our first batch of material generated solely by tvworthwatching.com questions...

SERIES PREMIERE: This eight-episode prequel series is based on a 2001 movie comedy that, at the time, earned only $295,000 at the box office – but since became a cult favorite for fans of a certain generation (i.e., the generation after mine). The concocters of the original, Michael Showalter and David Wain, enticed all the original actors – many of them now major stars, such as Paul Rudd, Bradley Cooper, Elizabeth Banks and Amy Schumer – to return for a Netflix prequel. So the

Disney Channel is throwing all the clout it can into this new made-for-TV musical, hoping to recreate the lightning that was captured in High School Musical a Disney generation ago. (Specifically, 2006.) Kenny Ortega, who directed High School Musical, is behind Descendants as well, and it centers on the secretly raised, now-teen children of four iconic Disney villains. Mal (Dove Cameron) is the daughter of Maleficent (played here by Kristin Chenoweth, pictured with the young series leads); Carlo
