The stakes at the Belmont Stakes are never higher than when a horse has won the previous two legs of the Triple Crown, and has a chance, if victorious in this race, to pull off the rare, and impressive, equine equivalent of the hat trick. If California Chrome is first across the finish line this afternoon, as at the Kentucky Derby and Preakness, it’ll be only the 12th horse in history to earn the Triple Crown. How affirming would that be? The last horse to do it was named Affirmed, more th

One of the last films James Gandolfini made before he died was this 2013 romantic comedy-drama, which co-stars Julia Louis-Dreyfus as a divorced woman who starts dating a genial man (Gandolfini) only to discover he’s the ex-husband of her new close friend (Catherine Keener). This movie combines two franchise HBO stars – Gandolfini from The Sopranos, Louis-Dreyfus from the current Veep – and showcases them beautifully. It’s another reminder of what a fabulous actor we lost

This 1954 movie is not only a great movie in its own right, and a permanent record of one of Marlon Brando’s most indelible and influential performances, but it occupies a slot this year in the particular cinematic history of New Jersey. This year, 2014, marks the 350th anniversary of New Jersey’s founding as an American colony – and On the Waterfront plays a part in the history of the Garden State’s film and TV history. It was set in Brooklyn, and filmed in Hoboken.

We’re getting very close to the end of Season 2, and answers are beginning to surface – as are new dangers. Cosima, one of many clones played by Tatiana Maslany, is beginning to show more extreme symptoms of her life-threatening illness – and there’s someone, also played by Maslany, who’s threatening lives as well.

Please, if you’ve yet to sample this BBC import, take a look at this latest episode of Norton’s instantly, endlessly delightful talk show. He puts all his guests on the couch at the same time, and part of the fun is watching them all interact – as in this new outing, which has two pairs of co-stars pushing their new movies at the same time. One pair is Tom Cruise and Emily Blunt from Edge of Tomorrow, and the other is Charlize Theron and Seth MacFarlane of A Million Days to Die

SEASON PREMIERE: Turn on Netflix this morning, or anytime therafter, and Season 2 of Orange Is the New Black is waiting for you. Not just the first episode of the new season, but all 13. Weeds creator Jenji Kohan has started the new year of Orange in an intentionally unsettling place, with prisoner Piper Chapman (Taylor Schilling) roused from her cell in the middle of the night, and transported to some unknown place for some unknown reason. The first hour is almost all Piper, and it’s a sm

On this week’s show, Bill Moyers hosts economist Joseph E. Stiglitz, who gave an impassioned speech last fall warning that we were destroying the American dream because of our country’s unfair economic policies. Stiglitz hasn’t changed his mind since – but he tells Moyers he can suggest a solution. Moyers’ series is scheduled at the local public TV station level, with a window from Friday to Sunday. To see where it’s shown in your area, check the Moyers &

This prime-time network TV salute to the invasion of Normandy, 70 years after the horrifically difficult military mission known as D-Day, brings Brian Williams to the Normandy beaches, with several men who have been there before – back in 1944, when Allied soldiers stormed the beach at Nazi-occupied France.

Part 1 of 2. Another 70th anniversary D-Day special, this one runs two hours tonight and another two tomorrow. (Hey, look, Ma! The History Channel is showing some actual history!) And it, like many other new D-Day documentaries, is taking the time and opportunity to interview surviving veterans of that part of the war, who were as young as 18 at the time, and certainly are resources to be used now, and gratefully.
