Even though the setting is inescapably familiar, with a few stock-character church ladies thrown in for good measure, TV Land's Hot in Cleveland spin-off, The Soul Man, shows promise...

On a midsummer Monday night, almost all the watchable TV offerings are movies. (What, you expected support for tonight’s premiere of ABC’s The Glass House? I may not throw stones at it, but I’m sure not recommending it.) Here’s a chance to see, unedited, the brilliantly filmed and acted 2007 movie about the early oil business, starring Daniel Day-Lewis in a role that, like the black gold he seeks, is a bubbling crude.

I saw this 2009 vampire movie after its release – but before its star, Jessica Paré, was cast as Megan on Mad Men. Here, she plays the bass player in a low-rent rock band who is turned into a vampire – and uses that edge to propel herself, and her group, to fame. So she sings, and vamps, even more than with Jon Hamm’s Don Draper on Mad Men – just don’t expect a version of  “Zou Bisou Bisou.”

Forty years ago, John Huston directed this taut character study about two stubborn brothers who are both boxers – and beginning to experience very different levels of success. But one of the brothers is played by an actor who’s still enjoying, and doing great things, with leading roles: Jeff Bridges. The other brother, by the way, is played by Stacy Keach.

Here’s one of the few Monday scripted series worth watching – and it’s only episode two, so you’re getting in early. Sutton Foster plays a showgirl who marries, and moves to a small town to help run a ballet school, along with her mother-in-law (Kelly Bishop). In tonight’s show, the two women watch as their troupe gives a small but meaningful public performance.

The title of this new HBO documentary suggests a sort of heartwarming Puppy Bowl romp, with tales (and tails) of lovable pups and scampering, loyal dogs. The subtitle – Fear, Loss Betrayal – reveals otherwise. So be forewarned: This is a documentary about the more than 2 million dogs euthanized annually because of owner neglect and abandonment, about dogs that turn on their owners, and other less pleasant extreme stories from the often complex owner-pet dynamic.

This day in 1992 marked the debut of CBS's Bodies of Evidence. The police drama, which focused as much on the personal lives of the cops as it did on the cases they solved, starred former Matt Houstonstar Lee Horsley as a veteran homicide detective. His second banana was played by future breakout star George Clooney. Only 16 episodes of Bodies of Evidence were produced. After the show's cancellation, Horsley went on to do a string of TV movies and the short-lived series Hawkeye, a syndicated

The stories spinning out from this year’s early rounds were classic, from 17-year-old high-schooler Beau Hossler (pictured) briefly leading the field at the U.S. Open to Tiger Woods entering the weekend tied for the lead, along with Jim Furyk and David Toms. But that was before Saturday – and now it’s Sunday, when the pressure’s on more than ever, and every mistake, and great show, is magnified. Woods had his worst Saturday ever, and has never come from behind to win, whi

LeBron James vs. Kevin Durant is one of the most compelling matchups of this series, and that’ll continue tonight, with the Heat’s James feeding off home-court advantage. But Durant and the Thunder, while painting themselves into corners early, always seem capable of fighting their way out. The series is tied at one game apiece – and this earlier start time makes it a friendlier viewing experience for East Coast fans.

SEASON FINALE: Finally, tonight we learn who killed Laura Palmer. And shot J.R. Ewing.  And what happened to the one-armed man. Actually, we learn the true identity of the killer, or killers, of Rosie Larsen, after a two-season plot line so prolonged, and so annoying strewn with herrings of every color, that it feels like a journey made before the creation of the national highway: all back roads, detours and dead ends. I’m still watching – but except for the lead performances, I
